We lively folk have a thing or two for getting to know ex-lively folk rather that be to pay respects and perhaps even befriend however since the best tune to grace any real or fictional business there’s been quite an uptick in fictional ghost based violence, and man do I like contributing to non existent problems. So follow me in what's technically a pseudoscience paranormal investigation as we engage in VS pseudoscience to see which of these ghouls would win if they were to fight!
Before we begin
What are we including?
-For this blog I’ll be sticking to mainly “mainline” for both series
-So for King Boo we’ll be using feats and scaling from the Super Mario Bros series, it’s related spinoffs (Luigi’s Mansion, DKC, Wario Land/Ware, Yoshi’s Island, Dr. Mario, etc etc), RPGS (including Paper Mario, though “papery” aspects like folding and the such will be ignored), Mario Party, Mario Kart, the Mario sports games, classic arcade games (DK 1, Jr, 3 and Mario Bros), Super Mario Adventures, and specifically the story mode of Mario Maker 2
-And for the Flying Dutchman we’ll be using feats and scaling from SpongeBob SquarePants, The Patrick Star Show, Kamp Koral, The 3 SpongeBob Movies, SpongeBob comics from Bongo Comics (As Stephen Hillenberg was heavily involved in them, approving the stories), SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom (Thanks Captain Pipsqueak, very cool), and the Cosmic Shake (Which was awarded the title of BFBB’s spiritual successor)
-Crossover stuff like Link in Mario Kart 8 or Nicktoons Unite, non mentioned arcade games (like the Luigi’s mansion and Mario kart arcade machines), mobile games, and anything not covered in the above list will not be included
Background
King Boo
“If you find me, you’re history”
Bowser, king of the koopas! Also king of the goombas, bob-ombs, shy guys, bloopers, piranha plants, and a whole lot more, so much more, like “how would one even reasonably keep up with all of these critters” more. Well Bowser has “sub-kings” or kings under his greater rule that he has watch over certain species like King Goomba, King Bob-omb, Whomp King, etc etc, however the most prolific of these sub kings is definitely the king of Bowser’s legion of undead, King Boo! A big mighty boo with mighty big ambitions, like how he believes he is the rightful supreme ruler of the world, and like he isn’t completely wrong per say? Everyone in the Mario world will one day die, they will get added onto the already massive list of ghost King Boo rules over, sure there’s ghost who don’t follow him but they’re basically lone wolves compared to the ghost who do, hell eventually Bowser himself will die and most likely go under King Boo’s rule when that happens, King Boo will eventually win. Of course given his vengeful and prideful personality and track record it’s gonna be a very eventful long road towards that inevitable conclusion but it’ll happen eventually.
The Flying Dutchman
“Who dares disturb the Flying Dutchman”
Based off the 17th century myth the Flying Dutchman’s origin in SpongeBob SquarePants are numerous, the earliest origin stating that the Dutchman is a vengeful spirit set on terrorizing the seas for never putting his body to proper rest and instead used it for a shopping mall display (understandable reaction). But others have claimed that he may actually be a sailor cursed to forever wonder the seven seas until the day he finds true love, others however assert that he may be moreso a satan like character, dragging sinful souls (like iconic children's cartoon character Mr. Krabs) down to Davy Jones' locker and granting any fool’s wishes as long as they give up their soul (like iconic children's cartoon character Mr. Krabs). Other times he’s more so portrayed as some guy who died and decided to take up a very passionate hobby in haunting and curses in the afterlife. Whatever version of this tale you (or the writer) subscribes to they all have the same result, the most terrifying and feared being under the sea only beaten out by the god ruler of the seas, King Neptune.

While for other kings in the Mario universe their crown is nothing more but a accessory for King Boo it’s his most powerful weapon, granting him the very power he uses to rule
-Shoot out bolts of lightning, with said bolts being able to suppress the dark moon’s ability to pacify ghost (Dark Moon)
-Can act as protection against the Mario Bros jump attacks (Paper Jam)
-However without this crown King Boo will not only lose all of the awesome abilities it grants him but also be reduced to a normal boo (SMB Wonder)

-Yes that’s right King Boo has his own car, now how exactly does he use the pedals?
Mario Kart Items
The thing separating Mario Kart from Nascar outside its races in space being public knowledge is the fact that there are items everywhere for anyone to use, and so as a participant of a few Mario Kart tournaments himself King Boo should be allowed these items
-The following items are from Mario Kart Double Dash, Wii, and or 8 Deluxe
-Mushroom: gives King Boo a speed boost, gives 3 speed boost if it’s the Triple Mushroom
-Green Shell: gives King Boo a shell to chuck at people, gives 3 shells if it’s the Triple Green Shell
-Red Shell: gives King Boo a homing shell to chuck at people, gives 3 shells if it’s the Triple Red Shell
-Fire Flower: Allows King Boo to throw fireballs for a short amount of time
-Coin: can buy a can of soda and also grants a small boost in speed
-Bananas: gives King Boo a banana to make people slip, gives 3 bananas if it’s the Triple Bananas
-Lightning: temporarily shrinks and slows down enemies and make them drop their items
-Thunder Cloud: imagine lightning but you have 10 seconds to pass it off before it strikes
-Feather: basically allows King Boo’s car to jump
-Fake Item Box: A item box but instead of giving you a item it gives you a concession
-Bob-omb: a bomb
-Boomerang Flower: allows King Boo to throw 3 boomerangs
-Piranha Plant: take a bite out of items and enemies
-Blooper: it’s existence is invalidated by the mini map
-Mega Mushroom: makes King Boo big
-Golden Mushroom: grants as many mushroom boost as you can squeeze out of a limited time period
-Blue Shell: a reminder that you’re mortal
-Super Horn: a way to cheat the aforementioned representation of death
-Bullet Bill: turns you into a big bullet bill to zip past and obliterate opponents
-Pow Block: an item which proves 100% useless if it has to hit someone in the air, I hope it doesn’t end up in a vs blog for a match between two perpetually floating ghost
-Super Star: Grants temporary invincibility
-Crazy Eight: Grants you a coin, a green shell, a red shell, a banana, a mushroom, a blooper, a bob-omb, and a super star
Double Dash Special items
In Mario Kart Double Dash there are these things called special items that only certain characters can have, however a special gimmick of King Boo (and Petey) is that they can use whatever special item they please, minus Luigis (Makes sense for King Boo) and Birdos (???)
-Mario’s Fireballs: Throw 5 fireballs
-Peach’s Heart: Protects you from 2 hits, though can fail if the hits are strong enough
-Yoshi’s Egg: A egg that upon breaking releases 3 items
-Chain Chomp: Hold tight as your pet chain chomp pulls you along it’s chomping spree
-Giant Banana: It’s a giant banana
-Bowser’s Shell: Basically throw Bowser’s shell to spin all over the track causing havoc, on that note
Bowser’s Corpse
I know speaking in terms of lore it’s treated more so as a suit but come on that’s totally Bowser’s corpse (LM1)
-Can summon explosive spike balls
-The head can float around and shoot ice projectiles that can freeze you
-Has great sucking power (you try phrasing it better)
-Sometimes puts the head on backwards and runs around like a headless chicken (or a backwards headed chicken?)
Painting Frames
These are King Boo’s favorite in the Luigi’s mansion series, constantly summoning them in hopes of trapping any victims in them for all eternity
-King Boo can make these frames gigantic enough to match the width of a hotel (LM3)
-Though there’s really nothing stopping you from moving out of the way (LM3) outside of intense fear and or getting jumped (LM1)
Spike Ball things
-They have bombs inside them (LM3)
Baseball Bat
-Apparently King Boo is the best character in the Mario Baseball games he has appeared in
-Leaked footage of the King Boo boss fight in Luigi’s Mansion 4

-While he mainly just uses this for cool looking knots (he is champion of the fancy knotting contest 3,000 years and counting) he can also use these knotting skills to strangle his opponents, replace their guts with knots, and most famously make a monkey

While there are many different kinds of ghost and spirits in the Mario universe (kind of fucked up if you think about it) that we could use a reference for what King Boo for this blog i’ll be using the default boo as a reference point given Super Mario Bros Wonder reveals that King Boo is a normal default Boo
-Fly and phase through walls (Any mario platformer where in which a boo is a enemy)

-Boos are also weirdly natural users of lightning magic like bolt and lightning orb (SMRPG)
General abilities
-Can spit out fire balls, even being able to charge one giant one as long as nothing is thrown into his mouth during the process (Paper Jam), and summon them from his crown (LM3)
-Duplication; can make multiple clones of himself (Paper Jam) (LM3)
-Shapeshifting; Turned himself into Paper Mario (Paper Jam)
-Implied mind control as when his crown jewel disappeared it makes the ghost he was using way less hostile (LM3)

-Can also change in size commonly using this to tower over anyone in the room or to even get small enough to enter your brain (SBSP S11E220)
-He’s also once turned himself into a nuke, where in which anyone who gets hit is forced to suffer for all eternity in the void (SBSP S8E162)
-Turn his face into a chainsaw (SBSP S11E232b)
-Can turn his tail into a boot (SBSP S11E220)
-Can turn his tail and hand into a mallet, he also probably loves mallets given he just owns one (SBSP S12E259a)
Soul Manipulation
-Has his satchel for the sole purpose of stealing souls

-With a singular zap from his hands he can make a soul into his servant (SBSP S11E220)

-Can open up a zipper and send you down a flight of despair, though you do safety end up back at home after the fact (SBSP S2E33a)

-Battle field control as he is able to warp the area around him with great effect (SBSP S4E70b)
-Can pop out of the TV even if it's just a commercial (PSS S1E7a)

Weaknesses
King Boo
-Light can be seen as a common method of making King Boo back down and even defeat him (MP10 (Star Rush) with Super Princess Peach showing that enough light can destroy his crown
-Speaking of, that crown is ultimately the source of most of King Boo’s iconic and noteworthy powers, but that does mean if it were to be taken away or destroyed he’d no longer have said powers and be reduced to a normal boo that can’t even muster the confidence to look the person they’re fighting in the eye
-You could always just move out of the way of the paintings
-According to the best worst mario game Super Mario Sunshine King Boo’s a bitch who can’t handle spicy foods to where overexposure to them could defeat him
-Has no real notable outright resistances, which is really bad for a fight against The Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman
-Scared of not being feared by Bikini Bottom, usually spiraling into a slump if this is to be the case
-Similar scenario if he were to lose his beloved ghost ship may that be to it being taken over or it being destroyed
-Upon finding true love the Dutchman will revert back to his normal human self, however if said true love proves to be untrue then he’ll go back to his ghastly cursed form (SBC#13)
-It should be noted that his crew do have a tendency to perform a munity every hundred years or so (SBC#25) (SBSP S8E162)
-SpongeBob, no really. He finds SpongeBob so annoying that he rather keep him out of hell than let him in, and finds SpongeBob’s mind so “terrifying” due to how cute it is that he flees the scene
-As noted his green dye can backfire on him greatly if the proper conditions are met
-Stuff gets into his beard and it hurt ouch ouch (SBC#3)
-Revenge of the Flying Dutchman kinda notorious for being ass
-Has no real notable outright resistances, which is really bad for a fight against King Boo
Before the Verdict
Something about the Sun
The DK moon feats older but less accomplished brother the Angry Sun doesn’t really get brought up a lot because it’s 2024, Mario power scaling as long since developed beyond this, however if there’s a posterboy for delayed development it’s me
-Now the common argument against this feat is that the Angry Sun is really small, smaller than Mario
-But not only is that probably because there was no way they were gonna have you dodge the largest thing in our solar system, there’s also Mario Lore that supports this like how there’s a track in the Mario Kart Games (DS/Wii) which depicts the Angry Sun as much larger and in place of the sun or Paper Mario Color Splash where the sun and Angry Sun are basically stated to be the same
-We did it folks, star level Mario bros
-Also given it’s called the Angry Sun it probably could get higher into star level than destroying our typical sun thanks to the rage boost, maybe????? (What am I writing anymore?)
The Dream Depot section (AKA setup for the Dreamy Bowser section)
The quote that changed Mario power scaling forever, also the quote that has sent me into a downward spiral.
-Aight so the typical idea of this dream cosmology is that each singular dream is a separate universe
-This is a misreading of the story and world of Mario Party 5 for the Nintendo Gamecube
-The more likely explanation of the boards in MP5 is that they are not representative of singular dreams but more so faucets of which supply the theming for dreams
-This can be most clearly seen with how Misstar talks about the pirate dream, the undersea dream, and the sweet dream. Treating them more so as a representative of their specific theme of dream instead of being a dream in itself
-Which explains why she exclaims “Protect everybody’s dreams!” when you go and protect a board because that board is what allows people to have those certain types of dreams
-There’s also Bowser’s whole scheme in this game which is to ruin everybody’s dreams by ruining these boards, which wouldn’t make a lick of sense if the boards were just representative of some random joe’s dream
-Also consider the visual of the ending cutscene as dream orbs fly down each depicting different moments from the same board
“Okay what about the Bowser Nightmare board, it’s quoted as being ‘A board born of Bowser’s dreams’?”
-Well that’s kinda near conclusive evidence that the boards in MP5 aren’t representative of dreams but instead a faucet to pour themes into dreams for 2 main reasons
-First being that this is treated as a odd one out of the dream boards, and not made in the standard conditions of a dream board because it was made by Bowser in hopes of wrecking everyone else’s dreams
-Second, the “born” in that sentence may just be metaphorical, as Eldstar later clarifies that the board was merely inspired by Bowser’s dreams, most likely due to how radically different they are from everyone else’s

I think this is the first before the verdicts section I’ve written that I felt the need to have a prologue for

-Well given the “a dream = a universe” angle isn’t being used and the “dream boards are at least made of some form of dream” is in contention uhhhhh
-I don’t know
-At best multi solar system if you want to say Bowser Nightmare is actually a bunch of dreams from Bowser not just inspired by then sure?
-Some may raise concern over the fact it took the combined might of Mario and Luigi was needed to beat up Bowser, but it should be noted Bowser was perfectly fine after the- quite frankly -violent burst of dream stone energy from his body
-Possible Multi Solar Mario everyone here's hoping the next section isn’t about the cast scaling to the blatantly universal character thus making this section pointless!
Scaling to Rosalina
This specific Lakitu from Mario Kart Tour has nothing to do with anything he just looks really funky and I vibe with that

-Also considering the linked clip in the scaling section its more likely it was referring to the entirety of the overthere not just its steps

-Yes but to get there they had to use a lot of warp doors, which warps the user from one end to the other, most likely working as instantaneous teleportation with no space from one door end to the other, heck you may just be entering and exiting out of the same door

Madame Kassandra who?
Okay so admitally the cosmic shake is probably the piece of SpongeBob media the average reader of this blog is probably the least familiar with both in a general and vs sense so let me set the scene
-The plot (or inciting incident) of the Cosmic Shake is that SpongeBob and Patrick use stolen bubble soap they got from Madame Kassandra and accidentally ruin the universe
-And then the game focuses you on getting a lot of cosmic jelly, which is basically what holds the fabric of reality together
-This is backed up by the portals you use to travel across universes (that might’ve also spawn from the bubbles) being made of said jelly
-Then you get to the point where she acquires so much cosmic jelly she makes said quote linked in the scaling section, even using said jelly to restrain King Neptune, who literally bathes in the aforementioned reality destroying potentially universe creating bubble soap
-Now there are contentions that could arise from how SpongeBob takes out Kassandra by chucking cosmic jelly goons at her and not in hand to hand combat however given there are multiple points in the game where SpongeBob has to solo groups of cosmic jelly goons I’d say he most likely still scale and the decision for him to take out Kassandra like that was because that's what the game designers thought would be the most fun for the player to do and no other deeper reason in terms of lore
Mermaid Man and the space time continuum

Aight let's just get this out of the way

-Anyhow, let's break down the 3 main counter arguments for the feat
“SpongeBob needed the blue jelly because the dimension was a higher plane”
-This is a misreading of the story as the blue cosmic jellyfish makes it known that actually his and SpongeBob’s planes were once connected before being separated under mysterious circumstances (6), this is supported by the bikini bottomites also having similar forms as the blue cosmic jellyfish (9), and given how often alternate dimensions in these SpongeBob comics are treated as being on the same plane it leads me to believe the usage of “dimensional planes” here is not noting a difference in the type of dimensional planes at play
“Okay but SpongeBob with blue jelly is the only main cast character who could scale to this”
-This more so ties back into the last point because the blue cosmic jellyfish’s plan relied on the people from SpongeBob’s universe surviving so they actually have a populace to rule over, and given said “true form reveals” of the bikini bottomites as well as the context that the blue jelly didn’t make SpongeBob a higher dimensional being but instead allowed him to communicate with a universe that’s been blocked off gives me all the reason to believe that base SpongeBob cast could easily scale to this feat

-well like, remember what story you’re reading, it's a story that says SpongeBob’s entire reality is a dream, and by its logic the dreamy dreamer dreamt that up, so I like Idk how to put it in words but I hope you understand

8th Dimensional SpongeBob?
Probably the most out there stat in this whole blog, and that makes a lot sense given the following counter arguments
“Frubbie doesn’t match the characteristics of a higher dimensional being, it also doesn’t make sense how he can exist in a 3D world, and it makes no sense for SpongeBob to even comprehend him”
-Now what is my counterargument for these claims? None, because they’re right, it makes no sense
-Which is the point
-Imagination in SpongeBob is meant to defy all logical limitations to make whatever the imaginator imagines into reality, I mean consider the iconic SBSP episode “Idiot Box” where despite just sitting in a big empty cardboard box SpongeBob and Patrick are able to recreate noises that they couldn’t make with their mouths, imagination isn’t limited by reality it doesn’t abide by it, it’ll make a 8th dimensional being while also breaking every single convention of higher dimensional beings as long as that is what the person is imagining, it doesn’t make sense, it doesn’t follow any sort of logic, it’s imagination
Man I sure do hope there isn’t a SpongeBob movie focusing on the Flying Dutchman slated for next year that’s going to have a most likely “mainline” video game to go along with it
Okay I’ve talked to people doing their own Dutchman blogs and when I brought up the upcoming movie they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about so there’s probably a good chance this is your first time hearing it about it too, can’t say much on it given we barely know anything about it but from the whispers we have heard from it I think it sounds promising
Verdict
Mr. Bob

There’s a lot here to unpack so lets start with what weaknesses this two ghouls share
1. Neither would be afraid of the other, making both of theirs go to tactics of intimidation useless
2. Outside obvious immunities thanks to their ghostly bodies, neither had many resistances against the other’s insta wincons
3. Most of their powers were shared by the other
Now let’s go into that third one, because it’s where we can begin to unravel this matchup. To begin with what was most likely King Boo’s unique ability that being duplication, yeah strangely enough (within the material this blog has decided to include) the Flying Dutchman has no real concrete example of being able to duplicate himself, and while how exactly King Boo’s clones hold up physically compared to him is a bit unclear, there is reason to believe that they could do everything he could. Add on his ability to summon Boos and it seems reasonable to believe King Boo could overpower Dutchie, right?
Well this leads us into the Dutchman’s own unique abilities in his reality warping and soul manipulation.
While yes both Dutchie and King Boo have shown impressive control over battlefields and ability to transport each other into separate dimensions, only the Dutchman has shown abilities like being able to rewind time and alter their opponents very history which is just beyond anything King Boo has shown. Also soul manipulation is a very broken ability in a battle between two souls, being able to damn any spirit to davy jones locker, and even curse any of the Boos, clones, or maybe even King Boo himself to serve him for all eternity makes for pretty tough scenarios to place King Boo under and while King Boo did he have the implied ability of mind control it was not as concrete and well shown off as Dutchie’s curses, which he has been able to pull off near instantaneously, and could likely override the mind control given Dutchie’s curses target the soul while King Boo’s seemingly work like typical mind control and- well -controls the mind (yes the Luigi Mansion ghost do have some sort of brains). Some may argue that King Boo’s crown’s lightning bolts being able to suppress the dark moon’s pacifying effects could give him enough reason to resist the curses, but consider that not only has King Boo never shown the ability to use this power on souls outright outside of the mind control I already went over, but also it seems very weak being completely undone by simply dusting off the effects, the abilities existence could also imply King Boo can’t simply undo things similar to the dark moon’s pacification as he had to attack the dark moon to stop it’s effects. For reference the dark moon’s pacification of ghosts works like a sun's rays of light to a flower, which is different from the Dutchman’s curses as they are separate from him, he doesn’t need to be present 24/7 for them to continue working. However the biggest debate here in terms of power sets is King Boo’s paintings vs The Flying Dutchman’s badges. Both of these options would 100% instantly end the fight, so which option is more likely? Well while King Boo’s paintings are definitely more iconic and more used than specifically the Dutchman’s badges, we have to remember that the badges are an extension of the Dutchman’s transmutation powers and most likely are badges not because that’s what he had to use them as but more so because he felt like using his transmutation powers with a camp theme given he was terrorizing kamp koral, heck he could probably turn you into sort of object really, probably including paintings as well. Take into account that while King Boo has to get you inside of a painting to pull off this win con while the Dutchman can turn you into a badge with a single snap of his fingers or in a puff of smoke.
Now there are still three areas I’d like to address quickly before I close out this verdict.
1. The Source of their power
Basically King Boo's crown is a way bigger and susceptible weak point to take away his powers than Dutchman's resentment over not being buried/love curse/innate powers. I mean one of Ducthman's abilities is turning objects against their owner/just turning objects into different things. He could turn King Boo's crown into a snake and King Boo would have no way to undo or counter it.
2. Intelligence, Skill, and Experience
Now to be fair in terms of intelligence and skill both King Boo and Dutchie have each other matched, both come up with and pull off elaborate scares all the time. However King Boo’s experience pales in comparison to the Flying Dutchman’s, given A) The Dutchman has been around for over 5,000 years and B) We have no reference for how long King Boo has been at this outside of comparing his experience to that of Bowser or E Gadd ghost hunting which would at most only net him 60 years, wayyyyy bellow the Dutchman
3. Stats
Oh yeah this is a VS blog after all! Anyhow ignoring higher tier SpongeBob arguments (fair) both would peak at Universal levels of power via scaling to their respective series’ main cast, however the Dutchman has a pretty huge stronghold on speed, the string feat proving to be over 100 Vigintillion (that’s a 100 followed by 60 zeros) times faster than the trial galaxies speed feat, made even worse if you want to bring the immeasurable SpongeBob feats into play
This fight is sure to end a hard earned victory, as it aint in character for either of these ghost to give up, but I think it’s time to give up the ghost and say it
